IP68 waterproof access control for outdoor doors and gates
This reader comes in two versions and only one survives outdoors. The standard S601 is not waterproof. The S601-W is rated IP68.
If the reader is going on an outdoor gate pillar, an exposed entrance or anywhere rain or hose washing reaches it, you need the W version. Indoors, in a lobby or corridor, the standard version is fine. Tell us where it is being mounted and we will send the right one.
EM or MF, how to check your RFID access control cards
The reader is supplied to read either EM or MF cards, not both. If you already have cards or key fobs in use, the wrong version will not read a single one of them.
The difference is the radio frequency they work on:
| Card type | Frequency | Also called |
|---|---|---|
| EM | 125 kHz | EM4100, proximity card, prox card |
| MF | 13.56 MHz | Mifare, smart card |
Most cards have the type or the frequency printed on the back, or on the box they came in. If yours do not, bring one to the shop in Al Khuwair and we will read it in a minute. If this is a new installation with no cards yet, either type works and we supply matching cards and key fobs with the reader.
Standalone access control system or networked door access control
This is a standalone access control unit, meaning the reader and the controller are the same device. It decides who gets in at the door itself, with no computer, no software and no server. Users are added at the keypad.
That suits a single door, and it is why a standalone access control system costs a fraction of a networked one. A networked door access control system makes sense when you need named users, time schedules, event logs, or several doors managed centrally.
This unit sits between the two. It has Wiegand 26 input and output, so if you later move to a networked controller, this reader keeps working as the reader on that system rather than being replaced. Fit one door now, expand later without throwing hardware away.

What else a door access control installation needs
This listing is the reader. A working door access control installation normally also needs:
- A 12V power supply, sized for the lock as well as the reader
- An electromagnetic lock, often called an EM lock or maglock, or an electric strike if the door suits one better
- An exit push button on the inside
- Cards or key fobs for your users, matched to the reader’s frequency
We stock all of these and quote them together, so nothing is missing on fitting day. Browse access control systems for the full range, or spare parts for power supplies and buttons.

Access control installation in Muscat and across Oman
Our engineer mounts the reader, wires it to the lock and power supply, fits the exit button, sets the unlock time to suit the door, and enrols your first set of cards before handover. We show you how to add and remove users yourself, which saves a call out every time staff change.
We install in Muscat, Sohar, Nizwa, Salalah, Sur, Duqm and every other governorate, from our shop in Al Khuwair. For vehicle entrances rather than doors, see our gate barriers and sliding gate motors, or our installation service.
Common questions about RFID access control in Oman
Can this be used outdoors?
Only the S601-W version, which is rated IP68. The standard S601 is not waterproof and should stay indoors or under proper cover.
How do I know if my cards are EM or MF?
EM cards work at 125 kHz and MF cards at 13.56 MHz, and the type is usually printed on the card or its box. If you are not sure, bring one to our Al Khuwair shop and we will check it.
Do I need a computer or software?
No. This is a standalone unit and users are added at the keypad. It also has Wiegand 26 output if you later connect it to a networked door controller.
How many people can it hold?
Up to 2000 users, each with a card, a PIN, or both.
What else do I need to buy?
Usually a 12V power supply, an electromagnetic lock or electric strike, an exit push button, and cards or key fobs. We quote all of it together.
What is the price?
OMR 28.280 for the reader. The lock, power supply, exit button and cards are quoted separately.
