Rolling shutter motors in Oman

For most shutters in Oman the motor is not a convenience, it is the difference between opening for business at eight and standing in the sun with a crank handle. A shop shutter, a warehouse door or a garage roller, all automated the same way and all sized the same way, by the weight of the curtain.

Tubular or side motor

This is the one decision that matters and it is where almost every wrong purchase in this category starts.

Tubular motors

The motor sits inside the drum that the shutter rolls onto. Nothing is visible from outside, it is quiet, and it suits domestic and light commercial shutters. It is limited by what will physically fit inside the tube and by how much the curtain weighs, so there is a ceiling on the size of shutter it will handle.

Side motors, also called central motors

The motor mounts on the outside of the drum, usually to one side, and drives it with a chain or a direct coupling. Larger, more visible, considerably more powerful. This is what a wide steel shop shutter or a warehouse door needs, and it takes a manual chain override that will lift a heavy curtain by hand.

If a supplier quotes you a tubular motor for a six metre steel shop shutter, ask them what the curtain weighs. That is the specification, not the width.

Sizing it correctly

Three measurements decide the motor:

• The weight of the curtain, which comes from its width, its height and what it is made of. A perforated aluminium shutter and a solid galvanised steel one of the same size are not close
• The drum diameter, which decides whether a tubular motor will fit at all
• How many times a day it opens. A shop shutter cycles twice a day. A warehouse door in a busy yard cycles forty times, and needs a duty rating to match

The manual override, which is not optional

Power cuts happen and motors fail. If your shutter has no working manual override, a failure means the shop does not open that day.

Every motor we fit leaves with an override that works and that you have used once yourself, in front of us, before we go. On a side motor that is a chain hoist. On a tubular motor it is a crank rod, and the eye it hooks into needs to be reachable without a ladder, which is a detail installers routinely get wrong.

Safety

A shutter closes downwards with real force. We fit and set:

• Obstruction detection, so the shutter stops and reverses on contact
• Photocells across the opening where the layout calls for them, and always on a shutter that closes automatically
• Correct travel limits, so it seats properly at the bottom and does not over run at the top and damage the curtain

Dust, heat and salt

Three local conditions that decide how long a shutter motor lasts here.

Dust collects in the guide rails and increases the load on every cycle. A shutter that has become slow or noisy usually has dirty rails rather than a failing motor, and clearing them costs nothing.

Heat expands a steel curtain, which can bind it in the guides in the afternoon and free it again overnight. If your shutter only sticks in summer, that is what is happening.

Salt, if you are anywhere near the coast, attacks the drum bearings and the guide rails long before it troubles the motor. Worth a look twice a year.

Shutter not opening

We repair as well as supply, including brands we do not sell. The usual causes are a failed capacitor, worn limit switches, a broken spring taking the load off the motor, or dirty guides.
