Do these three things first
Before you call, and definitely before you force anything. One of these solves a fair number of the emergencies we are called to, and even when it does not, it tells us what we are dealing with.

Switch the power off
Find the breaker or isolator feeding the gate and turn it off. This stops the motor driving while you are working near it, and if the breaker had already tripped, you have just found your fault. Switch it back on once and see. If it trips again immediately, leave it off and call us, because something is shorting.

Release the motor by hand
Every operator we fit has a manual release and a key that came with it. On a sliding motor it is usually a small hatch on the side of the casing. On a swing arm it is at the end of the ram or under a cap. On an underground operator it is a plate in the ground beside the gate.
Turn the key, lift or turn the lever, and the gate should then move freely by hand. Do not force it if it does not.

Look at the photocells
If the gate opens but refuses to close, wipe the lenses of the two small units facing each other across the opening and check neither has been knocked out of line. This is the most common cause of a gate that will not shut, and it takes a damp cloth.
Do not force a gate that will not move. A sliding gate that has jammed on the track, or a swing leaf that has dropped, will destroy the gearbox if it is pushed hard enough. What is a repair now becomes a replacement.
Keep hands away from the pinion and the rack. The toothed wheel on a sliding motor will take a finger even with the power off, if the gate rolls.

This is the one we treat as urgent, because until it is closed anyone can drive in. Tell us when you call and we will say so honestly if we cannot reach you today.
In the meantime: release the motor and close the gate by hand, then leave it released and secured with a chain or the manual lock rather than trying to drive it. A gate closed by hand is a great deal safer than a gate standing open overnight.

Inconvenient rather than dangerous, and almost always solvable in the next few minutes without us.
In the meantime: release the motor with the key and push the gate open by hand. If you cannot find the release key, tell us the brand and model on the plate and we will talk you through where it is on that unit, over the phone, at no charge.
What to tell us when you call
Four things. With them we can often bring the part on the first visit instead of coming twice.
- Where you areTown and governorate. It decides how quickly we can reach you.
- What the gate isSliding, swing, barrier or shutter, and roughly how wide.
- The name on the motorBFT, CAME, Beninca, FAAC and so on, plus the model if you can read it. A photograph of the plate is faster than reading it out.
- Exactly what it doesNothing at all, hums but does not move, opens but will not close, moves halfway and stops, or a code showing on the board.
