Fiber optic cable carries data as light along a glass strand. It reaches much further than copper, which stops at 100 metres. It is also not affected by electrical noise. Both ends of a link must use the same fiber type. A single mode module will not work on multimode cable.
The parts of a fiber link
- Fiber optic cable comes from 2 to 96 core, for indoor, outdoor or armored use. Armored cable adds a layer against rodents and crushing.
- ODF patch panels hold the cable ends and the connector adapters in a rack.
- Pigtails have a connector on one end and bare fiber on the other. They are spliced to the cable.
- Patch cords link the panel to the equipment. Duplex cords use two fibers. Simplex cords use one.
- SFP modules plug into a switch and turn its port into a fiber port. Choose 1G or 10G to match the switch.
- Media converters join a copper Ethernet device to a fiber link. A single fiber converter pair works as an A end and a B end, and the two must be matched.
Choosing fiber optic products in Oman

What is the difference between single mode and multimode fiber?
Single mode has a 9 micron core and suits long runs, up to 10 km. Multimode has a 50 micron core and suits short runs inside a building, up to 550 metres at 1G. Both ends of a link must use the same type.
What is a fiber optic pigtail used for?
A pigtail has a connector on one end and bare fiber on the other. The bare end is spliced to a fiber cable, so the cable can plug into a patch panel.
What is the difference between simplex and duplex patch cords?
A duplex patch cord uses two fibers, one for each direction. A simplex patch cord uses one fiber.
What must match when I order an SFP module?
Match the speed of the switch port, 1G or 10G, the fiber type and the connector. The module at the other end of the link must match too.
