Gate stuck right now
Call, do not message
A gate stuck open is a security problem. A gate stuck shut means nobody gets the car out. Both are the same afternoon for us wherever we can, and the phone is faster than any form.
- Before you callFind the model plate on the motor and photograph it. Note whether the beacon flashes, whether anything clicks, and whether the gate moves at all by hand once released.
- While you waitEvery operator has a manual release. Unlock it with the supplied key and the gate moves by hand, so you are never trapped in or out.
What it usually is
Nine call outs in ten are one of these three. Read them before you call and you may find you have fixed it yourself, which costs us a job and earns us a customer.

Fault 01
The control board has failed
- What you see
- Nothing at all. No lights on the board, no click from the motor, the remote does nothing and neither does the wall switch.
- Why it happens
- In Oman it is nearly always heat. The board sits in a sealed casing in direct sun and the power section eventually cooks, which is what the scorching in this photograph is. Surges and wasp nests shorting the terminals account for most of the rest.
- What we do
- Test the incoming supply and the transformer first, because a dead board and a dead supply look identical from outside. If the board has gone we fit a new one, set the limits and the obstruction force again, and pair your remotes before we leave.

Fault 02
The photocells cannot see each other
- What you see
- The gate opens perfectly but will not close. Or it starts to close, then stops and runs straight back open as though something crossed the opening.
- Why it happens
- The safety beam is broken, so the gate is refusing to close, which is exactly what it is built to do. A cracked lens like this one, a knock from a reversing vehicle, spider webs across the eye, or blown sand on the glass will all do it.
- What we do
- Clean and realign both units, test the wiring back to the board, and replace the housing if the lens is broken. If the alignment keeps drifting, the mounting is the real fault and we fix that rather than keep coming back.

Fault 03
The gate itself has worn, not the motor
- What you see
- Noisy, jerky travel. The gate stops part way and reverses as if it hit something, or it strains and cuts out before it reaches the end.
- Why it happens
- The gate has become hard to push by hand, so the motor reaches its obstruction limit and stops, correctly. Flat spotted rollers, a rack with teeth worn away, or a guide rail crushed by a vehicle, as in the inset here.
- What we do
- Replace the rollers and any damaged rack section, straighten or renew the guide, then reset the force. We will not fit a stronger motor to a worn gate. That hides the problem for a few months and then destroys the new motor as well.
And the rest of them
- Remote works up close, not from the carFlat battery, or the aerial on the board has been snapped or coiled up inside the casing.
- The gate opens on its ownA remote button pressed in a pocket, a stuck wall switch, or water in a keypad.
- One leaf opens, the other does notA failed operator on that side, or a broken cable in the conduit to it.
- The gate has become slowUsually the thermal cutout on a hot afternoon, sometimes a gate that is binding and loading the motor.
- Beacon flashing, nothing movingThe board is reporting an error code. Photograph the display and we can often read it from here.
- Barrier arm droops or will not liftSpring tension out of balance. Cheap to correct, damaging to ignore.
Before you call us
Four things to try first
These take five minutes and they solve a fair number of the calls we get. If one of them fixes your gate, you have saved a call out and we would rather you knew that than found out after paying for one.
-
01
Check the breaker
Find the isolator or the breaker feeding the gate and look at it. A tripped breaker and a dead control board look exactly the same from outside. Switch it back on. If it trips again straight away, stop, leave it off and call us, because something is shorting.
-
02
Change the remote battery, then use something else
Fit a fresh battery. Then try the wall switch, the keypad or a second handset. If the gate answers to those but not the remote, the fault is the handset or its battery and a new one starts at OMR 6. If nothing works the fault is in the gate.
-
03
Wipe both photocells
If the gate opens but refuses to close, this is your most likely cause. Find the two small units facing each other across the opening, wipe both lenses with a damp cloth, clear away any spider web, and check neither has been nudged out of line. It works more often than you would expect.
-
04
Release it and push the gate by hand
Use the release key on the motor and move the gate yourself. It should run freely with one hand. If it is heavy, catches, or drops at the far end, the gate is at fault rather than the motor, and no new motor will fix that. Tell us when you call, it changes what we bring.

How a repair call runs
Diagnosed before we travel
Most companies send someone out to look, then send them out again with the part. We try very hard to make it one visit, because two visits is two lots of your time and ours.
- You tell us what it is doingA photograph of the model plate on the motor, and a sentence about the symptom. Costs nothing and it is often enough on its own.
- We narrow it downBetween the model, the symptom and any error code on the display, we can usually name the likely fault from the shop and load the part before we set off.
- We test in order on siteIncoming supply, then the transformer, then the board, then the safety devices, then the gate itself. In that order, because a fault at the start looks identical to a fault at the end.
- We repair and reset it properlyTravel limits and obstruction force set again, photocells realigned and tested, remotes paired, and the manual release checked before we leave.
What a repair costs
A repair bill has three parts and we tell you all three before we start. Nobody else in Oman publishes this, which is exactly why we do.
Labour
From OMR 10
Most repairs are one visit and one charge. A realignment or a board swap sits at the lower end. A day spent replacing rollers and rack along a long gate is more, and you are told the figure before we begin.
Parts
Shop price
Parts cost what they cost on our shelf, with nothing added for being a repair. Remotes run OMR 6 to OMR 23 depending on the model. Boards, photocells, rollers and rack vary by brand, and we quote the exact figure before anything is fitted.
Travel
Agreed first
Inside Muscat there is nothing to discuss. For Sohar, Nizwa, Sur, Salalah or anywhere else, travel is agreed with you before we set off. It is never added to the bill afterwards.
Diagnosis by photograph and message costs nothing, whether you go ahead or not. If we can tell you it is a flat remote battery and save you a call out, that is a good outcome for both of us.
Parts we hold
Boards, photocells, remotes, rollers, rack and springs on the shelf in Al Khuwair for the brands we sell, which is why most repairs are one visit rather than a wait on an order from Italy.
We also repair brands we do not stock, including Roger Technology, VDS and older units with no name left on them at all. If the part has to be ordered we tell you how long, before you commit to anything.

Questions we are asked
How much is a call out
Labour starts at OMR 10 and most repairs are a single visit. What moves it is how long the job takes, not how far we came, and travel outside Muscat is agreed with you separately before we set off. Parts are charged at shop price with nothing added.
You get all three figures before we start work, not on the invoice afterwards.
Can you tell me the fault over WhatsApp
Often, yes, and it costs you nothing either way. Send a photograph of the model plate on the motor, a photograph of the control board if you can open the casing safely, and tell us exactly what the gate does when you press the remote. Between those three we can usually name the likely cause and tell you what the part costs before anyone travels.
How quickly can you come
Inside Muscat we will usually be with you the same day or the next, depending on what time you call and what the fault needs. Outside Muscat we agree a day with you rather than guess. Tell us if the gate is stuck open, because that is a security problem and we treat it as one.
Do you repair brands you do not sell
Yes. We work on Roger Technology, VDS and plenty of units with the label long since burnt off. The difference is only whether the part is on our shelf or has to be ordered, and we tell you which before you commit.
Is it worth repairing, or should I replace the whole thing
We will tell you honestly, including when the honest answer costs us the sale. As a rule, if the gate itself is sound and the operator is under about eight years old, repair it. If the board and the motor have both failed on a unit that is a decade old and cooking in the sun, you are about to spend most of the price of a new one on a machine that will fail again next summer.
What we will not do is fit a bigger motor to a worn gate to mask the real problem.
Can you repair a gate someone else installed
Yes, and a large part of our repair work is exactly that. We do not need to have supplied it, and we will not talk down whoever did. We will tell you plainly if the original installation is the cause of the fault, because you need to know that before you spend money on the symptom.
My gate is out of warranty. Does that change anything
Only in who pays. The work is the same. If your gate is still inside its manufacturer warranty and we supplied it, the part is covered and you should not be paying for it, so tell us the purchase date and we will check before quoting you anything.
