About Gate Barriers in Oman

Gate barriers in Oman, priced and fitted

A boom barrier is the cheapest way to control vehicles at an entrance that does not need a full gate. No wall, no leaf to swing, no track to keep clear of sand. A cabinet on a foundation and an arm across the road.

We supply them from our shop in Al Khuwair and we install them ourselves, which is the part most suppliers in Oman leave to somebody else. The barrier, the foundation, the loop detector buried in the road surface, the photocells and any reader are all commissioned together as one job and warrantied together afterwards.

What a barrier costs in Oman

Nobody else in the country publishes this, which is why we do. Supplied and fitted, in Omani rial:

  • OMR 400 and up for a three metre arm on an existing base, at a villa or a small compound entrance
  • Around OMR 700 to 900 for a heavier barrier on a poured foundation with loop detectors and photocells, at a commercial car park
  • Up to OMR 1,500 for a six metre arm with a full duty cycle motor, loop detectors both sides and long range vehicle reading, at an industrial or shared entrance

Where you land depends on three things: the width you have to cover, how many vehicles pass in a day, and whether a foundation and a power supply already exist.

Choosing the barrier

Arm length

Measure the clear opening and add a little. Three metres suits a single lane villa or compound entrance. Four to six covers most commercial car parks. Beyond six metres you are into heavy duty machines with a counterweight, and the arm itself needs an articulated or telescopic section if there is an overhead obstruction.

Duty cycle

This is the specification people get wrong and it is the one that decides whether the barrier survives. A villa barrier lifting twenty times a day and a mall entrance lifting two thousand times are not the same machine, however similar the cabinet looks. A hundred percent duty cycle motor costs more and is not optional on a busy entrance.

Speed

Faster is not automatically better. A three second barrier on a quiet villa entrance is wasted money. A six second barrier on a car park with a morning queue creates one.

What goes with a barrier

A barrier on its own is half a system. What makes it work in practice:

  • Loop detectors buried in the road surface. One holds the arm up while a vehicle is underneath it, which is what stops an arm dropping on a bonnet. A second on the exit side opens the barrier automatically for vehicles leaving.
  • Photocells across the opening, as a second layer of protection.
  • A warning beacon, so drivers see the arm is about to move.
  • Access control. Remotes for a villa, a keypad or card reader for a compound, or a long range UHF reader for anywhere vehicles queue. See our access control systems.

Barriers in Omani conditions

Two things finish barriers here and neither appears in a European datasheet.

Heat. A cabinet standing in open tarmac takes direct sun all afternoon. An underspecified motor working near its limit reaches its thermal cutout and stops, and owners read that as a fault. We size with real headroom as standard rather than as an upgrade.

Dust and impact. Blown sand gets into the mechanism and into readers. Arms get hit, because arms always get hit. Choose a barrier whose arm is designed to break away or bend rather than transmit the impact into the gearbox, and keep a spare arm on site if the entrance is busy. A replacement arm is a fraction of the cost of a replacement barrier.

Brands we carry

CAME, BFT, LIFE, FAAC, SOMMER and others, all genuine and through proper channels with the manufacturer warranty intact. From compact three metre units up to the CAME GARD range for shared industrial entrances.

Not sure what your entrance needs? Tell us the opening width and roughly how many vehicles pass in a day, and we will specify it and price it at no cost, before you commit to anything.
